An illegal alien who shot an off-duty Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer in the face has received the maximum 15-year prison sentence, after a criminal history marked by repeated arrests and releases despite a deportation order.
U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska threw the book at Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, a 22-year-old Dominican national.
The dangerous career criminal pleaded guilty to his role in the July 19, 2025, attack in Manhattan’s Fort Washington Park.
“There is an overwhelming need to send a message to people who come to the U.S. to commit crimes,” Preska said, according to the New York Post.
Mora Nunez crossed illegally into Arizona in 2023 and was released into the country by the Biden administration, according to law enforcement sources.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said he received a deportation order in 2024.
He nevertheless remained in the United States, shielded by “sanctuary” policies, accumulating multiple arrests before the shooting.
